An Art exhibit and workshop inspired by #IconicFishes in Philippines

As we continue to highlight creativity inspired by #iconic fishes, we are delighted to share with you highlights from the Art Exhibit and workshop that took place recently at Robinsons Place, Iligan, Mindanao, Philippines.

The event welcomed participants of all ages and backgrounds, from children and families to researchers, artists, and ocean advocates, all united by a shared curiosity and appreciation for our iconic fishes. The event showcased 18 beautiful artworks and also provided an outlet for artistic expression inspired by our iconic fish, resulting in 58 new, spectacular pieces.

The event showed how culture, science, and creativity can come together to encourage marine conservation while sparking curiosity, imagination, and hope in the next generation.

This initiative was led by Dr. Sharon Tabugo, a member of the IUCN Seahorse, Pipefish and Seadragon Specialist Group and professor at Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology, and Ms. Chai Apale, Program leader for Project Seahorse’s Philippines seahorse programme.

Dr. Sharon shares her thoughts on what it meant to lead such a significant event, stating, “As someone aging gracefully, I realize that there comes a point when our greatest contribution is no longer just doing the work ourselves, but inspiring and empowering the next generation to continue it. We must nurture in them a genuine heart for conservation and trust them to carry the mission forward.”

One memorable moment was when a young child told her mother, “From now on, I will save the seahorses so I can help the seas.” Moments like these are a powerful reminder that this work matters and that even the smallest actions can make a difference when it comes to protecting our oceans.

While the success of this exhibit will continue to inspire and fuel momentum for the #InspiredByIconicFishes movement, it would not have been possible without the incredible support of so many individuals and organizations.

We would like to thank:

  • Dr. Sharon Tabugo, Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), including the Department of Biological Sciences and the PRISM Centers, for serving as our academic host

  • The Local Government of Iligan City (LGU-Iligan) and its City Information Office

Initiatives like these show that conservation can begin with something as simple as a conversation, a painting, or a child seeing the ocean in a new way. We hope this story inspires others to create their own events, start conversations in their communities, or take part in our Inspired By #IconicFishes movement in their own unique way.
