Full reveal of “Lament of the ocean – Ratapan Launtan” a woodcut print on fabric inspired by #IconicFishes.
The artwork was created by Malaysia’s leading art collective Pangrok Sulap and the fishing community of Kudat, northern Sabah. It came to life through a series of workshops where local fishers gathered to create, dance, print, and share their evolving relationship with the sea.
“The marine animals challenge us to see the beauty of sea life, and the scale of seabed destruction caused by fish bombing, construction, the skin diver’s use of cyanide, and industrial-scale bottom trawling. A lone traditional fisherman casts his line into an empty sea.
This work portrays the ocean as a wounded soul—beautiful, yet burdened by pollution, overfishing, and human greed. Lament of the Ocean invites us to hear the whispers of the deep, reminding us to see the sea not merely as a resource, but as life itself.” – Pangrok Sulap
